HISTORY OF IW DISTRICT 320
Inner Wheel Club of Trivandrum was the first Club in District 320. The Inner Wheel Club of Madras South was inaugurated in June 1963. The Clubs did not belong to any District but belonged to the National Council of Inner Wheel in India.
1966-70 saw the springing up of many clubs in the South, Madras South (1963), Colombo (1965), Calicut (1966), Madras (1966), Trivandrum (1966), Quilon (1967), Palghat (1968), Ranipet (1968), Alleppey (1970), Cochin West (1970), Cannanore (1970), Trichur (1970), Cochin (1971) were formed.
The Inner Wheel Club of Trivandrum worked for the formation of District 320 at the initiative of Dr. Malti Rana who was the Indian Inner Wheel representative. District 320 was the fourth District to be formed in India.
The Inner Wheel District 320 was inaugurated at the District Assembly held at Trivandrum in 1970 by Dr. Malti Rana. Mrs. Lakshmi. N.Menon then Central Minister was the Chief Guest of the day.
Mrs. Seetha Rajamony of Inner Wheel Club of Trivandrum took over as the first District Chairman. District Vice-Chairman was Mrs. Jer Nilgiria of Inner Wheel Club of Colombo & Mrs. Shanta Balakrishnan of Inner Wheel Club of Calicut was the District Secretary.
Inner Wheel District 320 held it’s first District Conference at Queen’s Club, Colombo on February 23rd 1971. The Conference was inaugurated by Mr. Willian Gopallawa. The speakers were Seetha Rajamony, Jer Nilgiria, Mr. R. Natesan Rotary Governor Nominee of District 3200 and Mr. E.C. Fernando.
Since the formation of the District, much water has flown under the bridge. In July 1974, the District was bifurcated into District 320 and 321 keeping in tune with the boundaries of the Rotary Districts. The District was further bifurcated into District 320 and 323 in 1985 and continues to be so till today,
Mrs. Grace Kuruvilla was the first District Chairman after bifurcation. The current District has many Association officers to it’s credit. Sheila Philip, Geetha Padmanabhan & Archana Kamath were Honorary Association Secretaries. Grace Kuruvilla, Padma Srinivas, Gomathi Viswanathan & Radha Prasad were Honorary
Association Treasurers. The District also had Shanta Mooken, Geetha Padmanabhan and Gomathi Viswanathan as Association Presidents, Gomathi Viswanathan as IIW Editor & Association CCC Chairman & Karuna Senthilnathan as National Editor.
